. ...I am happy to be alive when I see the waves wash upon the shore, when I see the colors in the sky, when the rain falls slowly on a warm afternoon. It does not cost me anything to experience these gifts, and I do not need to travel to far lands or perform great feats to see this beauty. I only need to stop and notice the beauty that is all around me. I have come to understand that the joy that I experience does not come from the beauty that I see, but from the beauty that I feel, the beauty of a simple joy.     “You,” she whispers again.      “Oh Grandma. This was from your Grandma Sarah. Isn’t it?”    She nods yes as I say, “It was written before the war, and you still have it and now you want me to have it?”    She smiles and then closes her eyes.    “Thank you Grandma. I will keep it safe. It is the best graduation gift that you could have given me.” I read it one more t...

I love getting lost

Although I enjoy hiking, hanging out with my loves ones and writing, there is nothing like getting lost in a good book. Since I was a little girl, I have been an avid reader. I often wish that I had a list of every book that I have ever read. I also wonder what the very first chapter book I read was. Hours can fly by when I let myself enter the pages. Riding Waves excerpt

“Hi,” I say as I slide into Dan’s truck giving him a kiss. “What’s that smell and what are you wearing?” he snaps. “The perfume that you gave me for Valentine’s Day, and what is wrong with my outfit?” “Who wears cowboy boots anymor e?” “I don’t know. Lots of people.” “Well they look stupid,” he hisses. I am not sure what is wrong, but I know that I didn’t do anything. I don’t dare ask Dan or he will just blame me. I am quiet as Dan drives. I didn’t eat dinner since it is only five and he knows that my dad doesn’t come home to eat until six-thirty. I want to ask him where we are going, what we are doing and what is for dinner, but I just purse my lips closer together. We pull up at a huge house that I have never been to before. Without a word, Dan gets out of the car and walks around to the back of the house. I follow a few steps behind him. When I round the corner of the house, I am in awe by the sight of the lake behind the house. I mean the house is spectacular too, but the sun...

Riding Waves by Susan Marie Schulhof Riding Waves by Susan Marie Schulhof Sample I sit there in his truck through two songs on the radio as Dan talks to Patrick, Matt and a blonde girl that I don’t recognize. I am not sure where Matt goes to college, but I know that Patrick at tends University of Harrisburg. My brother Jake and Dan were in the same grade in school with Matt and Patrick. The blonde girl looks around our age, and she is dressed in a pink coat, jeans and furry boots; the opposite of how I dress. As I watch Dan, I get more and more frustrated that I am expected to sit in the car as she smiles at him and keeps touching his shoulder. He laughs loudly at everything she says. He is very handsome, yet it is more than his looks that attracts others to him. He is so charismatic and charming that people, especially girls, are drawn to him. He emits this aura of self-confidence that makes him a natural leader. I roll down the window, but I can’t hear what they are talking abo...

As she struggles to balance her own needs with the demands of being in a relationship, she loses her best friend and is in danger of losing herself. She has some hard decisions to make when her choices lead her only to confusion and pain. While on vacation in Florida, she writes a poem comparing her own life to how she feels when body surfing.
